What You Need to Know about Modern Dating Jargon!
modern day jargon post

Some of you may know that I am currently studying to become a marriage and family counselor. So you can imagine that in most of my classes, we have very interesting discussions about dating, relationships, sex, etc.

In one of my classes, the discussion took a completely different route, and we ended up talking about Tinder and modern ways of dating. Anyway, long story short, I found out that there is a separate dating dictionary with words such as "ghosting". I guess I am too far gone from all this modern slang since I have been in a relationship for several years now. I obviously was super confused when I heard that someone in our class was "ghosted". Haha!

Today, I decided to write this fun post for those of you who are also clueless when it comes to this new dating slang. I had to do research on this topic, of course. I almost died laughing at some of these terms!

So let's begin with ghosting. I guess what it means is disappearing and not breaking up like a normal person should. Basically, one person completely ignores the other. Um, I guess this makes sense now.

Slow fade. This means gradually slowing down communication without a quick cut off.

Draking. I am sure if you love Drake, you guess that this word means being sad because of romantic failures.

Shipping. After doing this research, I finally understand why people say "I ship them" when referring to a couple. I was so confused every time I saw this reference on Instagram. It means to like and endorse a couple's relationship. It still makes no sense to me why in the world this is called "shipping".

Zombie-ing. (Insert palm slaps forehead emoji, haha!) So this term means trying to be a part of an ex's life again after ghosting him or her. Think of it as the dead coming back to life!

To Tune Someone. This refers to an activity when girls like guys' tweets, FB statuses, or Instagram pics to get their attention.

Benching. A less severe idea of "ghosting". A person basically uses another person, and does not want to commit to their relationship. One of the people in this relationship, the one who is doing the benching, keeps their options open.

DTR. This translates to "Define the relationship".

Am I the only one who thinks that dating can be so complicated nowadays? All these new terms to remember, so many dating apps to figure out, thinking of a perfect text to write to your crush, the idea of just hanging out rather than going on a date, etc. It is definitely amazing that many people are connecting and forming real relationships with the help of the internet, but I feel like dating is so much harder now than it was years ago.

What do you think of modern dating? Do you like it or not, and why?

Btw, if you know any other dating terms, please share in the comments section. I am sure there are so many of my readers who are curious just like me! :)

Thanks for stopping by, and I will see you on Monday!
